BALI, INDONESIA

“There is a saying in Bali: ‘We have no art. We do everything as beautifully as possible.’ This reflects my philosophy of practice. I try to remember daily what a gift it is to have the privilege of living in this wondrous world.” -Sam Keen

I knew a few things about Indonesia before going; I knew it was the largest Islamic country in the world, comprised of thousands of tropical islands, with a very strict anti drug policy. Beyond that and the occasional instagram picture I’d seen, like those by Jordan Hammond, I had no idea what I was going to find there. I would spend the next 4 months in South East Asia and I have to say that what I found in those first few weeks in Bali really opened my eyes to the extreme beauty and diverse culture that I was going to uncover there in the coming months. From the serenity of the rice fields at the foot of sleepy volcanos to the rivers of motorbikes that flow in the city streets, I was enchanted by the place. I think of it often and dream of going back soon. I think it’s important to note that Bali is culturally and spiritually very different from the majority of Indonesia but you will still find that the other islands are just as incredible in their own right and are very much worth exploring.
